In June 2015, we crammed a 2-barrel system into our garage and started brewing beer we actually wanted to drink. No business plan. No investors. Just a lot of grain, some questionable plumbing, and the kind of stubbornness that makes bankers nervous.
By 2018 we'd outgrown the garage (and our neighbours' patience), moving into a 15-barrel brewhouse in Dieppe with a canning line and a taproom where you can watch us work — or at least pretend to work.
Every can we brew is a nod to the stories that shaped this place. Flying boats, railway legends, shipwrecks, and a kissing rock. New Brunswick history is weird and wonderful. So is our beer.
The “Flying Boats” moniker and beer names, in general, are a nod to the history of transportation in southeast New Brunswick, including its early aviation, railway, ships and boats, and highway travel. This part of NB has a unique and interesting history that will be celebrated with full-bodied and flavourful craft beers tied to some of these stories.
Flying Boats Brewing was an idea that started in the early 1990s when owner Marc Melanson returned from 10 years of working as an automotive engineer in several European countries. After an abundance of distinctive, regionally produced beers in Europe, returning to Canada was akin to stumbling upon an arid desert — a lack of selection and variety to choose from. Hence started the process to see what North America could offer. The search for authentic locally produced craft beers was enjoyed during numerous business trips in the US and Canada.
Over the years, more and more locally produced craft beers appeared on the market, alongside new beer styles for different tastes. This coincided with the desire to channel his drive and passion into creating fresh, locally produced, Maritime-inspired craft beers. When a buddy said, “You should offer this to the public” — the gears started to turn. The long days and countless hours to create great-tasting craft beers began, and the passion has been driving the perfection of locally produced craft beer ever since.
Flying Boats Brewing started in our garage in June 2015, licensed under a 2 BBL system, after several years of home brewing and developing new recipes. We expanded to a new 15-barrel brewhouse in January 2018, with a small canning line and a fully licensed taproom offering beer flight samples, pints, growler fills, and 473 mL cans to go. In February 2024, Marc decided it was time to pass on the torch and sold the business to local entrepreneurs Alex Noël, Brad Devarennes, Kolin Barley, and Brian Harriman.
The taproom is open 6 days a week. Come grab a flight, watch the brewers work through the glass, and find out which beer is your beer.
